Have you ever considered a career in Motorsport?
If you are interested to know more about the career opportunities or just share a passion about Motorsport you are welcome to attend the National Women in Engineering Event at the IMechE in London on Tuesday 23rd June 2015.
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is proud to welcome a host of motorsport professionals including engineers, drivers, students and team managers to celebrate National Women in Engineering Day.
At this event you will be able to share experiences, make new contacts and hear about the wide range of career paths the motorsport engineering industry has to offer.
The evening will begin with short presentations from 3 groups of young inspirational female engineers from the following motorsport challenges:
Formula Student, F1 in Schools and the World Solar Challenge.
Then Jennie Gow, BBC Radio 5 Live F1 Presenter, will host the panel of Motorsport professionals asking them about their greatest engineering challenges and how overcoming this gave them a competitive edge.

National Women in Engineering Daywas established the Women’s Engineering Society (WES)
The aim is to celebrate the work that women do in engineering, and to showcase the great engineering careers that are available for girls.

Speaker Biographies
Claire Williams – Deputy Team Principal and Commercial Director, Williams F1 Team
After graduating from Newcastle University in 1999 with a degree in Politics, Claire began her career in the motorsport industry when she joined Silverstone Circuit as a press officer in 2000. Claire then joined the Williams Formula One team full time in 2002 in the role of Communications Officer. She was promoted to the role of Head of Communications in 2010, and was duly responsible for all internal and external communications surrounding Williams Grand Prix Holdings PLC. On the 1st April 2012 Claire was appointed Director of Marketing and Communications, and took a place on the company board. In March 2013 Claire stepped up to the position of Deputy Team Principal for Williams. In this role Claire works alongside Founder and Team Principal Sir Frank Williams to play a pivotal role in the day to day running and long term development of the race team.
Leena Gade– Race engineer, Audi Sport and Formula Student Ambassador
Four years ago, Leena Gade made history by becoming the first female race engineer to win the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race. Since then she has gone on to win another two Le Mans, including in 2012 with an innovative hybrid vehicle. Leena was named the World Endurance Championship’s Man of the Year in December 2012, and also the C&R Racing Woman in Technology Award in the same month – C & R being a foundation established by former racing driver Lyn St. James.The 37-year-old, from South Harrow, London, was born in the UK and spent some of her childhood in India. Having been interested in engineering from childhood, she studied automotive and aerospace engineering at university. She began her career in motorsports by taking a job with Jaguar as a part-time mechanist and data analyst. She then joined the Audi race team in 2007, and was quickly promoted to race engineer. Formula Student 2015 will be Leena’s third year as an Ambassador.
Bernadette Collins– Performance and Strategy Engineer – Sahara Force India Formula One Team
Bernadette has recently joined Sahara Force India Formula One Team as a Performance and Strategy Engineer which sees her support race and test events from the factory and advise on various strategy options, pit stop laps, safety car windows, tyre degradation and relative paces working predominately on Sergio Perez side of the garage. Previous to this she worked as Performance Engineer for McLaren Racing working on Jenson Button side of the garage for the 2014 race season. Bernadette graduated from Queens University Belfast with 1st Class Honours Master’s degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.
Gemma Hatton- Data Engineer, Paras Racing BTCC & Technical Writer for Racecar Engineering Magazine
Since discovering her love for motorsport at 16, Gemma has been pursuing a Race Engineer career ever since. She has a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from Bath University, where she worked with the Formula Student team and is currently completing her MSc in Advanced Motorsport Engineering at Cranfield University. She spent her placement as a Vehicle Performance Engineer at Nissan Europe, which led to racing with JRM in 2013 during the Silverstone and Spa 24 hour Blancpain rounds. Now, she is a BTCC Data Engineer for Support Our Paras Racing and plays an essential role in the birth of this new team. Alongside her studies and racing, she has continued to write technical articles for Racecar Engineering Magazine.
Jennie Gow, BBC Radio 5 Live F1 Presenter
An industry professional for more than 15 years, Jennie Gow is one of Britain’s leading female sports broadcasters. Specialising in Motorsport, Jennie is the lead anchor for ITV’s coverage of the FIA’s Formula E championship. Her Formula E responsibilities run hand-in-hand with her role as presenter and pit lane reporter for BBC 5 Live’s Formula One coverage, a position in which she has excelled since 2011. Alongside her commitments for the BBC and ITV, Jennie also presents live coverage of the 2015 British GT Championship for Motors TV as well as annual live events days such as Goodwood Festival of Speed. She has also presented World Cup Rowing, the FA Women’s Cup Final and she is a regular pundit (and show winner) on BBC Radio 5 Live’s ‘Fighting Talk’. Jennie has presented many documentaries, a passion of hers since her first job at the BBC. Recently she was nominated for the SJA’s ‘Best Radio Documentary of the Year’ for her work on the BBC’s James Hunt special. She has also hosted live shows on Ayrton Senna, Women in Motorsport and England Netball.
