John Surtees Opens 'Henry's Studio' at Headway, West Kent

On Monday 11th June ‘Headway’ in West Kent celebrated the opening of ‘Henry’s Studio’ at their base in Tunbridge Wells. John Surtees and Father Kevin Taggart from Worth Abbey cut the ribbon to declare the studio open. The many guests included Lord March, the Mayor and Mayoress of Tunbridge Wells and others who had given donations to the Henry Surtees Foundation, which made the building of the Studio possible. The event marks the completion of the development of the Headway centre.

Di Drummond, Community Project Coordinator, Headway in West Kent, said “As a small charity, we are very much dependent on the interest and fundraising efforts of local people and major organisations such as the Henry Surtees Foundation. Of course these days, it is much more difficult to raise funds both for major projects and to keep our essential services going. This can have a serious effect on our ability to support vulnerable people. We are extremely grateful to the Foundation for providing us with the funds to realise our vision to provide a super facility for our head injured clients.”

The Henry Surtees Foundation has given a total of £131,000 to Headway in West Kent. The Studio will be instrumental in developing facilities for those living with the effects of a brain injury. (see notes).

The Henry Surtees Foundation acts as a resource for young people by developing their skills and capabilities. It also supports charitable programmes and projects for people with accidental brain and physical injuries. Headway is proud to be the first recipient of funds to provide facilities for head injured people.

The Foundation was set up by veteran racing driver John Surtees and his family, following the tragic death from head injuries of his son Henry, at the age of 18, in a motor racing accident.

John Surtees added, “I would like to thank, on behalf of my family and I, all those who have helped us achieve this first milestone in the history of the Foundation.”
