M-Sport attend careers day for National Motorsport Week

In association with National Motorsport Week, M-Sport attended a local secondary school this week – Nelson Thomlinson School in Wigton – to give Cumbria’s brightest young minds a taste of what career opportunities the motorsport sector has to offer in the local area.

Jointly promoted by the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) and the Motor Sports Association (MSA), National Motorsport Week runs from 29 June to 7 July. Its aim is simple – to promote and inspire the excitement of motorsport to new audiences – and what better way for M-Sport to promote the cause than by inspiring some of the county’s most enthusiastic future engineers.

Travelling to Wigton with a Ford Fiesta RS WRC in tow, M-Sport personnel provided sixth form students (aged 17 to 18) with all they needed to know as they look towards a future career in motorsport.

With tips on how to best keep up-to-date with the sport as well as advice on some of the most beneficial further education courses around, M-Sport also encouraged the youngsters to get involved in marshalling and other sectors of the UK’s thriving motorsport industry.

The students were also given the rare opportunity to take a hands-on look around M-Sport’s top specification Fiesta – the car they will be hoping to work with following a stint in higher education. Needless to say, the firm will be hoping that a number of the attendees will be encouraged to return to the county for a career with M-Sport in the future.

Richard Millener, M-Sport Customer Liaison Manager, said:

“National Motorsport Week is a great initiative and M-Sport has always been instrumental in getting more people involved and excited about our industry. This careers day was the perfect opportunity for us to get the younger generation excited about rallying whilst, at the same time, promoting all that Cumbria has to offer – you don’t need to travel if you want a successful career in motorsport, it’s right here!

“Hopefully we will have inspired a lot in these youngsters today and a number of them will return to the county with M-Sport once they have achieved their engineering degrees.”

Andrew Walker, Nelson Thomlinson School Assistant Head of Sixth Form said:

“It is really important to have local businesses coming into the school and we are really keen to continue this initiative in the coming years. There is a lot of talent in Cumbria and a lot of the students want to stay in the area so it’s important for them to know what the options are.

“There are so many different opportunities at M-Sport – not just your typical rally driver – which perhaps all the students didn’t realise: PR, marketing, sponsorship, sales. M-Sport have certainly got the children interested and considering future employment in the motorsport sector.”

Aaron Cockburn, Nelson Thomlinson School student, said:

“I’ve always been interested in motorsport – although mainly track racing and motorbikes. Today has been really useful for me because I didn’t even know M-Sport was on our doorstep! It’s great that there are opportunities like this in Cumbria and the fact that there are so many opportunities within M-Sport – not just engineering and team mechanics – makes it all the more interesting. I’ll definitely be considering it as an option once I finish my degree.”
